I just moved back home from another state and am about to set my aquarium up. I have a 10 gallon tank that I have enjoyed over the years. I gave all my fish away before I moved and left some furniture to a friend. They needed a new bedside table so I gave them the small table I had kept my aquarium on. I am thinking about setting up the 10 gallon on a night stand that I have. It is square with a sturdy base and is solid wood. The only problem is the tank hands off about half an inch on each side. You guys and gals think that there will be any problem with the small overhang?

if it is an all glass aquarium then yes
the stress of the weight of water on the points
where it overhangs will eventaully giv way and result
in either a cracked or worse a full blown broken tank.

if however the tank has an external frame it should not
be a problem as the frame will distribute the weight evenly.

The aquarium is all glass with a plastic ringing around the top and bottom. I don't know if the plastic would be considered a framing persay.

From a purely aesthetic point of view, I'd buy a new table.

It would just look odd if it was hanging of the sides.

If your tank is like most of the ones with plastic trim, then yes it needs to be supported on all 4 sides.

Get a piece of 1/2" plywood the size of the bottom of the tank & put it underneath. You could paint it the color of the trim, it will blend in.

That sounds esier said than done.
I'd just go to (Dare I say it?) Wal*Mart and get a really cheap $10 stand. I haven both of my 10Gs on those stands...they seem tro work quiet well.
If your smart, then I should say, skip walmart, go to petco or any lfs and buy a aqurium stand.
Thats what would be best....

If you are going to spend $10, just buy some 2x4's & screws, build your own.
