Hi,

I am having problems with droping pH and was told that an open top system is better for gas exhange.

Anybody got any experience of open systems and if so what are the advantages disadvantages?

I currently have a Red Sea Max 250.

Thanks.

I keep wrasse so not an option but I cannot see it making much diffrence I would be tempted to light a section at the back if you are having PH swings or do you just have low PH in general?

Open topped tank can help with gas exchange but only if you have decent surface movement on the water. Also most of the "all in one" systems are pretty well ventilated anyway so making it open topped probably wouldn't help.

Most of my marine tanks have been open topped but this is due to the fact I have been using arcadia light units. I have had a couple of jumpers though and wouldn't recommend an open top unless you really need to (i.e. if you have heat issues in the tank). Even if you do go open topped make sure that you cover the top of the tank with eggcrate or similar so you fish cant jump out.

i dont think it would make too much difference to your ph worries tbh, as said...make sure a powerhead is breaking the waters surface

Open top:
  • death of livestock from jumping
  • increased evaporative loss requiring more top offs
  • saltcreep mess

Just a few.

PS...add a refugium. Check your pH in the morning and then in the evening. Post your results here for an interesting conversation.

Gas exchange in closed tops are fine as the glass does not touch the water also I have an open sump with plenty of surface movement.

Over heating is only an issue if you are using Halides I cool mine through the sump with Azoo fans
