Hi, recently 1 of my cardinal tetras had his mouth open for around 2 months, i did check to see if food was stuck, but there wasnt. I also checked on the internet, but found nothing.

I also noticed my remaining guppy, (who i was supposed to give back with the others) had the same open mouth. Now these fish were eating fine but the wouldnt swim. The tetra would hide under the cave and the guppy would be behind the filter.

The tetra died 2 days a go and the guppy yesterday.

What was this, is it contagious?

The only thing I know about open mouths is it can be something lodged in the mouth, sores or ulcers in the mouth, injury.

Was the mouth swollen or red and inflamed.
Do you have anything sharp in the tank.
Have the fish been darting around the tank.
Any whiteness around the mouth.

What are your water stats in ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, and ph.

hi Wilder, i was hoping you would come across this thread.

Was the mouth swollen or red and inflamed. No
Do you have anything sharp in the tank. No, not that i know of, apart from live plants and a terracota pot

Ammonia- 0
Nitrite-0 I only have these two test kits.

Really dont know what has happened to them.

Lost harlequins to the samething and nobody seems to know what it was.
Even tryed a bacterial med out of desperation but it never helped.

Never know a fish to survive either with an open mouth.
I can't offer any advice as I stumped as much as you are, if its not caused by an injury.
