My lfs accidentally dropped one of the gouramis I wanted to purchase, one of a pair. It was the second time I had visited, the first time they advised me my tank might not be ready as I'm a newbie so I left it a while. Anyway the chap knew I really wanted them and I was chuffed when they were still there. Unfortunately it somehow flipped out of the net and he was worried about selling me a fish that might be stressed/injured etc. He put it back in the tank and it seemed fine, he has promised to keep it for me for a week if it survives. Would a week be long enough to see if there are any problems. He's a very small shop and doesn;t know when he will have more in and I've fallen in love with them, but I don't want to set myself up for problems.
Thanks for any advice

Just make sure the swim bladder isn't damaged make sure it's not flipping upside down or unable to maintain it's balance in the water.

Leaving the tank empty won't do anything in preparing it for fish, it would be a good idea to read up the pinned articles on new tank sydrome and fishless cycling in the begginners section as this is how most people prepare their tanks for fish :)

Sorry didn;t make myself clear when I said the tank was empty I meant it had no fish it it was cycling with some medium from another surce, but had only been left a short while not the full recommended 8 weeks or so.

Again, adding media from another tank and then just letting the tank sit wont do anything. You need a source of ammonia to get the cycle started. Read through the links in my signature. Sorry if I misunderstood your post to begin with.
