Hiya People

I need help! I Have 6 Guppies in a 10 gallon tank and iv noticed 3 snails possibilly apple snails! There very small and i want to know will they cause damage? Can I keep them or should i kill and dispose of them now? Iv been told ill be over run by them if they breed! The tempreture in my tank is 80 Degrees F and the ph Is 7. In the tank i also have 2 babie fry and expecting more soon! Will the snails overcroud my tank and will it harm my fish? Please reply! Thanx

you can always buy a fish that eats the snails. i bought a clown loach but then he died a goof 6 months later but he kept them awat, however wouldnt recommend a clown loach for your tank coz they grow big but there must be other types you could get. just a suggestion, i aint no expert, only had my tank for over a year.

Fish that eat snails don't always work- and clown loaches grow very large, and need to be in groups.
I suggest getting some food for them- leaving it for about an hour or 2,then come back, and there should be snails on it- take the piece of food with the snails still on it and throw it out.

that is a good idea, i put holiday food in my tank n it got covered in snails could have just removed that n they would all have gone, a clown loach was good while he lasted but did find out they liked to be in groups n after he died i found out they grow big, lff didnt tell me that.

you sure there not pond snails they breed like wild fire. they have a brown and yellow shell. my tank has loads of them i get rid of six and the next day there 6 more :)

Don't get a clown loach for a 10 gallon tank. That would be a HUGE mistake. Keep your eyes pealed and pluck them off once you see them. Use an algae scrubber daily. Use a red light at night just in case some of them like to come out more at night time.

If you have hard plastic ornaments you might want to think about taking them out of the tank and washing them off. Only do this if your tank is TOTALLY cycled.

if the snails are golden yellowish they are apple snails and they wont hurt your fish or plants really. unlike other snails these guys need a male and a female to reproduce. even then they lay their eggs on the glass outside the water. they can then be easily removed and disposed of. these guys make great algae cleaners and wont interfere with any of your fish.

if they are brown and tear shaped they are pond snails and these are a different thing altogether. these guys can reproduce with themselves and will do so quite regularly. they are incredibly annoying. i would suggest in this case some snail away or some other product to get rid of snails.

If you only have a few pond snails then, at first, try physically picking them out as you see them. If they are small and few you can possibly get them all before they reproduce anymore and you'll be done with it. If there were more eggsacks that hatch in time just pick those young snails out too. As long as you get them out now, and nip it in the bud early on, they can't get much of a change of reproducing and actually taking over the way people say they can.

If you let the pond snails grow up they WILL reproduce rapidly and you will have a hard time keeping up with their reproduction, depending on how clean your tank is and just how much a lot of them can thrive.

As I'm not a fan of chemicals and poisons, I would use chemical treatment as a last resort only.

If they're the common apple snail type then I myself would leave them be. They are great algae eaters but when they eat all the algae you do have to keep them fed with things like algae wafers and the like and they will produce poop which you will see on sand if that's what you have. If you have gravel then I wouldn't worry about it.....as their poop doesn't add much bioload/pollution to the tank.

Hiya :)
