well i decided to see if i could find some ammonia today after fruitless visits to DIY stores around me.

firstly i tried my local chemist but they didnt keep any and also said it wasnt available to order (i'm sure it was when i worked in pharmacy a few months ago, but thats neither here nor there)

then i tried the pet shop along my road (a tiny one) next door to the pharmacy, the girl in there was very young and unfortunately there was a dead fish in one of their tanks which i told her about and she removed straight away, everything else looked prety healthy tho. i asked if she could ask the owners if it was possible to order some in for me, she said she'd ask and could i check back tomorrow

so on going into my corner shop to get some ciggies (i know dont all shout at me i am cutting down!), its the kind of little corner shop that sells everything, i hunted around the shelves for a while and i spotted a bottle of household ammonia. i checked the label and there were no surficants or detergents listed so i bought it for a measly £1 !

i got it home and put some in a bowl of water and swished it about with a spoon and no bubbles collected on the surface so i took this as proof that there was no other detergents in it.

i added a few mls to my tank and waited about half an hour before testing so that it had time to swish about

lo and behold my ammonia reading is now a healthy 4 ppm

i cant wait until my nitrites start growing too, and then my nitrates

ooo i'm sooo excited lol

can u tell this is my first tank???

Hi, glad you found some ammonia! It was a little hard for me to find too. I just finished fishless cycling with ammonia about a month ago in my 55 gal. It took me 34 days to complete. It all happened just exactly like the instructs said it would! It's just BEING PATIENT being the hardest thing!!
I just LOVE it when a plan comes together! :hey:

thanks deanna

well everyone the news today is that i have a slight colour change on my nitrite test :)

its not aqua blue anymore but a darker blue so not quite at 0.25 ppm yet but looks like its going the right way

i'm so glad, hopefully this means i'm doing things right :)

i put my household ammonia in last Wednesday so that would make it about right for it being a week for the nitrites to start showing

yay i'm so happy :)
