Hiya People,

Thanx for my answering my last question and im going to play it safe and not get any loaches but i was wondering if i could have any tipes off algea eaters who dont live in groupd and are not agreesive and will fit in a 45 gallon tank with 10 guppys.

thanx :)

You might try amano shrimp. They don't need groups but could easily be kept that way. They really don't add anything to the bio-load so it's almost like they aren't there from a stocking stand point. Otos do actually need to be kept in groups.

bristlenose plecos, ottos, and algae eating shrimp are good bets. Ottos are the easiest to find of the three and should be kept in a small group (3 is really fine...5 is better). The bristlenose can go solo and the shrimp probably will need to be in a group just to be able to keep up with the algae if you have a serios problem, but they're not really big.

Avoid common plecos and chinese/golden algae eaters.

I saw some american flag fish the other day and according to what I've read are really good algae eaters that seem to be fine solo. Anyone know anything about their temperment??

Ought to mention though, that amanos like to be in groups too. Aside from the fact that more of them will eat more algae, just a single one will spend more time hiding than eating algae. I'd get at least 2 if any at all. It's not like they add much to the bioload. :)

Thanks for clarifying. I have 5 and they do great. I've had the for close to 2 years now. They were so small when I got them, you almost couldn't see them. They are now a couple inches long.

Florida Flag fish are supposed to be good algae eaters and are very pretty but will most likely be too large for your tank. Not really up on them but I think they prefer company also.

If you decide to get otos, check with the fish store to see how long they've had them. Otos are all live caught and don't travel well. The shops usually experience a fairly large die-off in the first couple weeks after they arrive. If they have had them for 2 weeks, you are probably save in buying them and can expect them to make it. If you buy them as soon as they arrive, chances are, you will probably lose about 50% of them.
