I just picked up a small batch of riccia from my lfs, (not so local, hour+ drive, but only one in the area to ever carry it). So Now I am thinking about doing some redesigning in my tank so I can use it and ran into couple of questions.

I have an onion plant, which has taken off and has roots popping up all over the gravel. My question is does the blub of the onion plant need to have light, or is it ok to "hide" it with slate pieces?

Also the lfs didn't have much riccia so of course I need it to grow first, any tips? I read somewhere to use a fish tube or a tub and let it soak in there for a week or so. At the moment, I threw in a small fry/breeder tank into my tank and put the riccia in there. Is that the right idea or should I do something different? Theres no water movement coming from the top (just the slits on the bottom of the breeder tank) will that be ok?

Any information would be great.

keep the top half of the bulb showing, otherwise it may rot.
leave the riccia floating in the tank, and it should so double in size. It gets the most amount of light and an unlimited supply of CO2 when floating, hence why it grows so fast

Thats what I assumed, but wasn't sure of it. Will take it out of the baby filter, and find a spare air hose so I can keep track of it a little better. Thanks again
