Hi I have a 60L tank, all parameters fine (just checked) pH 7.5, temp 25 celcius. I have just noticed one neon with one white spot on his tail. Not convinced it's whitespot as he's not rubbing or itching and none of the others are affected. I've added some stress coat for the time being in the hopes he may have caught it on something and its just scar tissue. I added two new fish recently but neither of them were affected and both still healthy which is why I'm not convinced it actually is whitespot. I lost a lot of my last stock from whitespot including one of my treasured kuhlis and obviously dont want to lose the remaining one or any of my other fish.
Would people treat for whitespot just in case it is and therefore catch it early or wait to see if thats what it develops into before starting treatment? In which case, does anyone know of any loach-safe whitespot treatment I can get in the UK?

Is the spot bigger than a grain of salt.
Any redness to the spot.
Does the spot look like it's filled with fluid.
See if the spot moves position.

I would just wait before you add a whitespot med.
If more spots appear and are the size of grain of salt, I would then treat for whitespot.

Spots on fins are not always whitespot.

It's not on his fin, it's on the side of the tail. Another one has appeared just further up from it and on the other side of his body but still no signs of irritation and nothing on any of the others. It's hard to see if there's any redness because a) its on the red bit of him and b) he wont flippin stay still long enough for me to get a good look at it. But it does appear to be more off-white almost grey than normal whitespot spots. He's still seems happy and is very active and eating. Not sure how to proceed with this. :-(

P.S. the spots are still quite small, not bigger than a grain of salt and dont look like their fluid filled. I'm almost erring on the side of a fungal infection. If it is, would it affect the other fish as well or more specifically this one?

If more greyish whitespot have appeared the size of a grain of salt it sounds like whitespot.
Whitespot can also look like small greyish white spots on fish.

Another sign of whitespot can be that the fish have tiny bubbles on them before whitespot breaks put.

There still aren't any spots on any of the other fish though. In all my past experience with whitespot all the fish in the tank would've had spots by now. Isn't that the way whitespot works?

The only thing I know is greyish white spots the size of a grain of salt are usually whitespot.
Fish can get columanris spots but there usually bigger and have redness around the edges or red in the centre of the spot.

Its a bit of a puzzle! Not sure what to do about it really. Dont want to risk treating for whitespot if it isn't.

Ok.
Give it a few more days.
If you notice anymore spots on the fish or other fish. Medicate.
