Finally an English council is getting the message. The practice of giving away goldfish as prizes at funfairs and carnivals is already banned across Scotland but the English & Welsh councils have, til now, not considered doing so.

Bristol are the first to step up and ban this horrible practice, hopefully more councils will follow suit.

My first fish when I was around 9 or 10 was a funfair goldie and that was over 40 years ago. The fish was scrawny and unhealthy, thankfully dad knew how to care for fish and it lived to a grand old age but not everyone has that knowledge or experience to fall back on and these fish are often kept badly at the fair and even worse in the homes of people who have no idea how to keep them

So Bristol's one small step towards banning them across the whole of the UK is, to me at least, great news.

That's how I started keeping fish - back in the mid 1990s my teenaged sons turned up from the fair with 4 goldfish, which spent their first night in one of my mixing bowls in straight untreated tap water :( Not the best start for any fish, one of them didn't make it through the night.

English & Welsh counties frowned upon the goldfish prizes but didn't actually ban the practice......they would advise against it. The RSPCA and other animal welfare charities have been pushing for a full ban for years but its never been accepted til Bristol did. Maybe now that Bristol has, then others might follow, it is entirely discretionary from one council to another, except across Scotland where its been banned for quite a while.

Awesome! We need more of that globally
