One reason why you shouldn't buy Pacus

awww i dunno if i told you guys my little story but here goes anyway!

i was watchin the TV and pet rescue came on.the inspectors went to a persons house after a complain was made that a prianah was being kept in a tiny tank, once they got there the owner showed them the 'prianah' which was in a tank about 80 gallons and the fish was soo hug it could harldy move.It had afew deformetys because the owner thinking it was a piranah fed it raw meat and nothing else and paacus arnt carnivores. The inspector asked the man where he got the fish to which he replies i won it at a local fair!the fish was taken away and at the end it got taken to a sea life center to a huge tank with around 6 other pacus  it looked sooo cute swimming around and didnt know what to do with its self :D

Awww that makes me so sad. Such a cute 'little' thing- I could well up a bit! :-(

Do you think many pacus get bumped off by people when they get too big? It's a horrible thought but I wonder how many are sold every year as little things and then 'disappear'...

:(

I had no idea they go that big. My lfs sells them and they are no bigger than my hand. He must weight quite a bit too.

my LFS has one in.it is a permenebt reasident and has a HUGE tank almost covering the back wall behind the counter, where they advertise ornaments etc and he shares his tank with a huge arowana and a ray.

i typed in pacu on google n this is what i found

Yep, unfourtunately its the larger species of pacu that is commonly sold... 'Yessir, that pacu's fine in your 10 gallon'.... Poor thing though, I think he should offer it to a public aquarium.

the picture of the 2 guys fishing is funny except the fish still on the hook that tiny old rod could take that pacu no way except the fish still on the hook
you'd be amazed...when i was a young'n my dad caught a 20-25 lb salmon using just as small of a reel and rod (shimano and an ugly stick) on 6 lb test line! it took him an hour of running up and down the rocks on the pier to get it in - it's all about drag and tiring them out!

Most definatly! Pacus in the wild eat nuts the size of a 10 year olds fist, they need those teeth to crack open the shell around it.

Them fish are UGLY! But that is still no excuse to treat them like that!!! That poor ugly fish still has feelings and needs to swim his little tail around.
