here is a video of one of my forktail rainbows, just noticed it has a patch of white on either side. looks a bit fungal but its the only fish in the tank with it.

should i treat for a fungal infection with 505 measures, as i have pictus catfish?

any ideas

video here

It's only fungal if it is a cotton-wool like growth that is white or grey in colour.

The white area looks more like a white film of excess mucus which can be caused by improper water conditions or irritation from parasites. Is that particular fish newly bought or have you had it for some time?

If it's new, it has probably come from a less than ideal environment with bad water quality. If it's not new to your tank, I suggest doing an ammonia, nitrite, nitrate and PH test to ensure that these variables are within range for that particular species of fish (all fish require ammonia and nitrite to be 0 ppm obviously).

If your ammonia/nitrite level is above 0 ppm, do 2-3 60-80% W/C's or one 100% W/C (providing you can place the fish in a temporary container) to completely remove the ammonia/nitrite. Replace all the water; be sure to dechlorinate it, ideally with a dechlorinater with aloe vera herb as this may help to protect the fishs skin from whatever was/is irritating it.

just tested water, nitrite 0 ammonia 0.

i did buy a goby 8 days ago and he developed a swollen eye and cotton wool like stuff on his sides within the first day of being in the tank. i took him back on the wednesday and came away with some pictus catfish from the same shop. i did do a 50% water change after the goby had gone.

this was last wednesday so 6 days ago and i only noticed the rainbow last night and as i said he is the only one that has it. it also is starting to appear cotton wool like, (white threads hangign off the area)

do a multi cure treatment in your tank. :)
