+1, "breeding nets" are not a nice environment for fish. I also made the mistake of using them many years ago, when I first started keeping fish. I still have one now, but I haven't used it in many years, I keep it only for emergencies.
You should make the tank itself a good environment for the mother and fry (yes, plants are the easiest way). Java moss and hornwort are possibly the easiest two plants for covering bottom and top of the tank, but some Hygrophila will also help.
