I have had neons.. they die all the time.. none of my other tetras./.. black neon and glowlights tetras never ever die...

If water quality was good and you climatised them properly is sounds like the stress was to much for him.

Sorry to hear about your neons
I lost some early on due to the ph being too high, apparently they are not as easy about ph as some other other tetras. Once I got it down to 7.1 the remaining 4 survived and the extra ones i got have been fine.
