Hey,

Bought some Peacock Gobys..Literally today and one has already died..I'm guessing it was in poor health when i bought so am going to complain to the local fish place. I am however concerned about the survivor as i got a pair. Its the female..Will she be ok by herself or will I need to buy another male to keep her company?

cheers for any help in advance!

check the water quality in your tank before you blame the petshop. If you don't have test kits then take a glass of tank water to another petshop and have them test it for PH, ammonia, nitrite and nitrate. Get them to write the results down on a piece of paper and post them on here.
Check the temperature and then supply us with some info on the tank, for example, how long has it been set up?
The female fish should be fine on her own for a little while.
Don't add any new fish until you find out why that one died.

I tested the water before I added any fish with the API test kit. Waters temps around 25 degrees. Ph is the only thing thats kinda high 7.5ish. ammonia is nothing, nitrite is nothing and nitrate is in the low numbers. The tanks about 5-6 weeks old. So ifs shes alone I will need to eventually get her a tank mate?

ok, now you can blame the fish shop :)

your water sounds fine and a PH of 7.5 isn't a problem.
You were spot on with your assumption of an unwell fish. You were just unlucky and got a bad fish. Run it back to the shop and take a seperate sample of tank water with you for them to test. They should swap it for another one. Then your little female will have another friend :)

yeah.
where i live. there is a petshop that gives a 1 week thing so if the fish dies within that week..
they replace it
but. i would say get another fish so that fish isn't too lonely..
cause i guess mainly the fish hang out with their type..
e.g guppy mostly hangs out with the guppies.

They only had the two :(. Think i'm going to try somewhere else they seem clueless when it comes to fish matinence!
take it back anyway and they should give you a credit note. Then you can ask them to get another one in for you and they can give you a call when it arrives.

Took it back earlier and they refunded me. They aren't sure when their going to get some more gobys in. Apparentlty their hard to get??? According to them anyways, so don't exactly trust it!

some fish are seasonal and only turn up a couple of times a year. And if it's an unusual fish to start with, (not common like guppies and neons) then most importers won't bring them in as often because they won't be big sellers.
