One Fish Dying, The Rest Starting Similar Symptoms

R.I.P.

Look for red streaking on body or fins.

Are any fish flicking and rubbing like something irratating them.

Well we took the dead molly to the pet store. We decided to go to a nice independently owned one instead of petsmart. The guy there looked at the body and told us nothing on the outside was wrong, no bloating or bacteria, she looked pretty healthy. He told us to add salt and that it should be enough. We weren't positive, so we bought the stuff you recommended anyway.

Can we use parasite and bacteria medication at the same time, or will that have unwanted effects? We are only adding 1/3 the normal amount of salt because of our african dwarf frogs. On sunday we'll have an additional tank that we can put them in.

Also, I can't quite tell, but it seems like there might be flukes on one of the fish. It's blending in really strongly, so I can't tell, but it almost looks like there's little worm shaped bumps on the back of his body, near the start of the tail fin. Another fish, however, seems to be scratching, because it seems like some of her scales were rubbed off on one side.

Something I found interesting about your story...

You said you have had the Molly for about 8 months and it has had problems 7 other times. You also mentioned that you just changed your filter...

How often do you change your filter? Is it monthly, by chance?

No, this molly never had any problems. It was a different one that I've had for 13 months. He's very happy as of right now. However, it is monthly or so -- unless there's an infection. If that's the case it can be sooner.

The reason I ask is because you could be causing your tank to enter a mini-cycle everytime you replace that filter...soooooo...

Your problem maybe a sudden ammonia spike caused by a lack of good bacteria. This could be weakening the fish to other conditions which they would normally be able to fight off with their own immune systems.

Rather than changing out the filter every month try simply removing the used filter and rinsing it out in the water you are doing a water change with (the old tank water, that is). This will increase the flow through the filter while maintaining the good bateria on the filter, not to mention saving you a good deal of money for all the filters you have been spending.

Not sure if you can use salt with frogs. So I would check.

Signs of flukes are.
Flicking and rubbing.
Darting or erratic swimming.
Inflamed red gills, or pale gills with excess mucas.
Opaque body with excess slime.
Red sores or pin prick marks on the fish.
Swimming in a jerky movement.
Weightloss sometimes.
Spitting food out.
You usually can't see flukes with the naked eye.
Also flukes cause bacterial infections, as in there hooks they carry a nasty bacteria which enter the fish blood stream when it pierces the skin.

Does the worm have a forked tail.
