I can't lie, I bought more fish today...i got another fem sunset wag tail platy and then i moved the blue high fin back in to the main tank...one dannio died so i did another emergency water change after changin it last night and put in the filter from the 2.5 gal so there are two filters going...anyway I just found a FRY!!!!! in my main tank OMG@@!!!! Someone gave birth!!!! either the blue high fin or the sunset i bought today gave birth!!!!!!!!! I can't believe It :hyper: whoever's kid it is though it's gonna have to do survival of the fitest b/c im afraid to move any fry and shock them!!! OMG i hope it lives so i can see if it's a blue high fin mm or sunset wag tail :D I'm so excited i just opened my fry powder food and dropped a loittel where he was swimming at :) AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH LOL

Deep Breaths....In....and Out... ;)

That's exciting though, congrats! :D The pictures are...where?

i tried taking a pic but i have an old digi cam and when i try to zoom in it get's blurry big time and it was right against the glass but i couldn't get a good pic then a dannio came to play or eat it, and it swam to behind the heater and is still alive so good to know evolution is workin ;) i haven't found anymore so i on't know whatit is or whom it came from though i guess it would be the blue high fin since she is hiding in teh cave...if i get pics illpost asap :) yeah haven't been this excited in a while hehehe what luck and it wasn't even from the one i suspected would give birth first hahaha

That's Livebearers for you...they aim for the surprise factor.

I'll be looking forward to pictures, especially if it's from your gorgeous Hi-Fin. Depending on what she bred with, you could have some gorgeous fry. *crosses fingers that Daddy's genetics aren't dominant*

that and that the survival of the fitest proves this fry is fit...it is no longer in teh area where i found it after it hid from teh dannio, so either its smart and is hiding more or it got eaten...im so bad about this...but i hope my fish ate a lot a few min ago when i gave them a corn treat so hopefully they don't feel the need for a fry snack...also the tank that that fem was in was populated with rainbow mm platys and high fin blue mm platys so to me either way whichever gene is dominant, if it is her child it should come out pretty cool :) ok time for daddy to buy a bigger house ;) hahaha

I just found 2 maybe 3 fry in the main tank again this time though the one i see right now looks a lot different then yesterdays...it has dark mark on the tail and has blue eyes, the one yesterday had dark eyes, but this one is def blue...1 which could be a 3rd i saw comin outta the cave so if it was a newbie, that means my Blue High Fin MM Platy is the one givin birth since she's hiding in the cave

Just as a small update, I didn't see any of the fry this morning, but to be safe dropped a litle bit of the fry food in (not the liquid kind) just in case ;) I was so sure after not seeing them all day that they were all eaten by the platys. But, again, I go over to take a peek at the tank and theres the little one with the blue eyes and one of the platys went after it and he dove for my fake plants and hid there. Then I tracked him down again floating near a leaf and it has a dark line by the tail and its fin is dark in color...considering that and the blue eyes, whats the chance it's from my blue high fin?? im seriously thinking of moving the other fem into the main tank, but have this feelingthe second i move her she'll give birth and there'll be a billion fry in my community tank and none in the small tank that i wanted them to be in for safety lol...other thing fry really are amazing, or at least their instinct to survive, this one found one of the leaves kinda made a shape like one of those fly eating pot plants forget the real name, but you get the idea the plastic leaf wraps up to provide a nice little hiding place for him and in he swam...if i ever catch him outta hiding ill try and get a pic i still couldn't beleive the color on him :)

Little blue eyes, how cute is that. You'll have to see if he keeps them, none of mine born with blue eyes have.

If the coloring matches your Blue MM, the chances are pretty good it's from her, unless you got the same genetics from another Platy. I could tell which fry were going to be Wagtails by about 1 week. They get slight indications of coloring, and usually you can go by that. In the end, you just have to see how they grow up though.

I can't wait to see pictures! :D

Anna,

Yeah it's so cute b/c they're these huge blue eyes looking at u...now im not sure which platy they are from b/c i saw dark color near the tail and on the fin (cannot remember right name is dorsal the fin on the top lol if so then dorsal fin is dark but hard to say if it is HIGH like my blue platy) Anyway i cleaned the tank today just using a big slurpee star wars cup...think the power of slurpee kept them safe hehehe or maybe it was obi wan kenobi and the force  Anyway, was very careful and used a net to grab as much gunk as possible...anyway i set the one cave down carefully in case they were under it and i guess i set it funny so that it's not flat on teh gravel and there is room to go underneath...after i got hte new water in and things settled down, i found the 3 fry finally in teh same place at the same time...apparently the cleaning got them into the same area so that was cool to see then they all scattered under the cave or under the plants :) i was worried the tank cleaning might traumatize them or id accidentally kill them or something, but was nice to see them alive :) but the sunset wag tails are very clever, they go straight to the plants and almost hunt for fry at which point i try and do something to scare them away which is easy since they don't like the digi cam ;) I'll try and get pics of the fry...but i might have to try and steal my step dads fuji fine pix as it is like 5 megapixels and mine is probably like 1 and by kodak

so right as i post this i go look at the tank then another fry swims to the group so there's 4! 1 of whom got adventurous is headed to the open water (middle of the tank) so maybe this time next week i'll be able to tell who was the mother :p
