So Today I got home from work and I have 5 babies in my tank. So I went out to the store and bought a little seperation net to keep them from being eaten and bought fry food to give them. Its practically powder....the sales person suggested it. I says for all new borns. Its called hikari first bites. So I got them into the net things and they ate the food and they are all set. How long does it take for fry to develop? ? One more question. Can bettas breed with other fish species? I have these babies and in my tank I have a betta and a sword tail platy. They get along great but I have taken the swordtail out a few times. Is it possible that they had these babies togather? Does anyone know how this is possible don't fish have to lay eggs then they get fertalized. Could my betta have picked her eggs up and hatched them. They don't fight and now i have babies and they are all healthy.

Your post is cute and funny I'm laughing, sorry cant answer your questions.

if thats all you've got in your tank then the platy is female and has stored sperm and dropped fry, betta and platy can not cross breed

have you had the swordtail long? chances are its female and was pregnant when you got it or has stored sperm and dropped some fry in your tank :) (they can store sperm for months!)

Ok cool I didn't know thy could store sperm and yes thats all that is in my tank. Well lets hope they do well they ate but one has passed he was like the odd one of the bunch (out of 5) anyways they ate the food and have been swimmin around for an hour or so now is there anything that I should do to other than what I have done to keep them alive?

yup, those are the platy's fry. they give birth to live fish, not eggs. the betta and the platy most likely ate quite a few of the fry.

just make sure you are doing lots of water changes.

How often should I change the water and how much of it? their in a 10 gallon tank filtered and heated

cycled?

I would think daily. .... Although I've never kept livebearers b4 nor bred fish myself. You may want to go ask in the livebearer section. Someone here may know though.... I know for a fact that 5teady has experience.

A lot of the time you can keep them in the same tank, given that you keep the mom in a breeder net and separate the male. With a betta though, they would have become a very quick snack (i'm sure they were a good snack for a while).

Best of luck m8 :good:

Whatever water changes you were doing are probably fine (15-25% per week) until the fry start to grow. Your tank is understocked, so even if they all grow up and you want to keep them you can. If any of the fry are male though, I recommend you offer them to a fish store and keep them separated from their sisters. They will impregnate their sisters and then you will end up with tonnes of fry. I speak from experience here, but I did it on purpose to convince my parents I needed more tanks because I had so many fry. (It worked.)

ah i missed that you used a separation net. I mis-read and thought you said you had them in a separation tank.

Nothing special needs to be done then as Laura said. I would have said slightly more water changes, but i really do not speak from experience.

 i need to read things slower/more carefully

Rofl... that's awful.... yet.... genius.... must try this on fiance..... :shifty:

haha - lol! Well it did work!

15-25 is not much, I know, but it's a ten gallon tank with only two fish in it. If you want to do more then it certainly won't hurt and once the fry start to grow it will need 25-50% a week.

also its best that the fry are fed several times a day, usually 4-5 are recommended, just don't feed all the fish this many times

there is a very good chance your swordtail impregnated your platy.... cross breeding between the two is certainly not uncommon so perhaps you should keep an eye out for more baby making.... good luck!
