Hey! I was just wondering, I know bettas have a reputation for jumping sometimes, but generally how high could they go? Have many people had much truoble with their darling fishies trying to get a taste of freedom?

I'm thinking of removing the lid from my tank, and dropping the water level to about 5 inches from the top of the tank and having it as a betta setup, would this be enough? It's a 35L Arcadia Arc tank with the normal arcadia light that clips on the side.

Thanks in advance!

Hi, minikarter,
I'm actually kind of wondering how much actual water/swimming space that'd leave...
Mine don't deliberately jump out, but in the past I've had one unintentionally jump out several times fighting her way over floating plants toward food on the surface, just in the length of time it took to set a container down nearby before closing the lid.
Greed conquers all, except gravity...

It would leave about 8 inches depth in the tank down to the substrate, it's then about 11inches wide and about 16 inches long.

The tank's current lid is just a sheet of glass as standard when bought, though it does have a couple of holes to put fingers through to pick it up. I would quite happily leave it there, but the fit isn't great with a gap all the way around just about big enough for a fish to fit through (so another option would be to make a lid out of perspex that would fit).

I was also thinking of using a couple of plants that could possibly grow out of the water, hopefully creating quite a unique tank but i've not researched the types of plants that can do this as yet!

...I'm literally brainstorming here and hoping to pick the minds of other peoples expertise :D

Limnophila aromatica will grow out of the water and flower if given natural light aswell as most bog plants but you will need to grow them first as most cuttings would be to small to reach the surface

I have hygro and cardamine lyrata growing out of a couple of tanks, the cardamine looks really cool, vine-like.
