I tried posting this question in my other thread, but I don't think anyone saw it.
So here goes!!

I will be receiving some Olive Nerites soon. They are currently being kept in freshwater, however I want to acclimate them to brackish water @ sg 1.012. I was wondering if anyone has had experience in acclimating them. I am curious to know about how long I should take to do this successfully. Can I drip acclimate them? A few hours, a few days, or a few weeks? What do you think would be the best method?

Provided the olive nerite you're getting is Vittina usnea (Neritina reclivata) then acclimating it to brackish water should be very easy. These animals live in intertidal areas and are able to acclimate to changes in salinity that occur over short periods. It shouldn't take more than an hour to acclimate them between fresh and brackish (SG 1.012) water conditions.

Do check though that your olive nerites are the species mentioned above; there are look-alike species in the trade, and some of those are true freshwater species that will have less tolerance for brackish water.

Cheers, Neale

Thanks Neale!
They are in fact Vittina Usnea!
I will drip acclimate them for around an hour!
I can't wait, They should be arriving today!

PS. I recently ordered and am reading your book...Its WONDERFUL!!!!

Glad you're enjoying the book!

It's a shame that when I was writing the book there were rather few brackish water invertebrates. As and when version 2 comes out, you better believe there's going to be a chapter on this topic!

Cheers, NEale

If you have any information that you would like to share about BW Inverts, I would love to gain your knowledge. I do live in Florida, and am close to the St. Johns River, which is a great BW area. I was thinking about going over there one day and looking around in the shallows and around docks to see what I could find. This topic "BW Inverts" is something totally new to me, and I am interested in learning/exploring possibilities.

Thanks, Scott

I received the snails the other day, drip acclimated them for an hour, and added them to my tank. They are amazing. I added 10 and they went right to work. They have removed algae from the decoration rocks plants and glass. I highly recommend them s brackish algae control.
