Hi, I'm wondering whether or not to get some nerite snails for my aquariums. I heard they lay eggs all around the tank and make a mess. I don't want this, but I'm wondering if betta fish(male and female) will eat the eggs? If not, are there any other small fish that'll eat the eggs? Also, will shrimp and nerite snails compete for food, and will one of them starve because the other one's too fast to get food? Lastly, how do you acclimate them from brackish to fresh water? Oh yeah, and will they accept algae wafers if they run out of algae to eat? Thanks.

The eggs nerite snails aren't that bad, they are small and certainly don't ruin a tank. I've seen loaches eat them, bu nothing else will (they are really tough). Loaches would eat all the othe4 snails though.

I'm not sure olive nerite snails are even really suited for living in freshwater (they aren't commonly sold here).

However, if they are, they should just be able to be acclimatised like normal fish. If you want to be more gentle on them, dip acclimatise them by starting a syphon with an airline and tying a knot in it so that the water drip out to acclimatise them over a few hours.

Nerite snails wont eat algae wafers (unless you keep them on their own). If they run out of algae on the glass/rocks they will starve over a few months. But they don't really compete with shrimp for food, they eat different algae and shrimps are more generalist scavengers.

Thanks. I found another place that sold them in freshwater, so acclimatizing them from brackish to freshwater won't be a problem anymore if I get them. I've got 2 more questions, though. Is there anything at all other than algae that I can provide for them to eat? Surely they can eat something other than algae, right? And can I put them in a newly cycled tank?

Nope, they only eat algae, and the biofilm that comes along with it. You really need to make sure there's enough algae for them.

They may be sold in freshwater, but that doesnt mean they will live in it long-term, do some more research first.

Loads of brackish animals can live in freshwater for months.

Yup, these can live in fresh and brackish water, just like other nerites, but they're easier to care for than zebra nerites. :good:

But I won't get them, because I don't want them to starve and I don't think I have enough algae for them. I'll probably get them later, though, when I have more algae.
