Old Tank Syndrome

I was just wondering, why do we get the old tank syndrome? Who here has experienced it? I got it once.

The tanks we had when I was young did. But back then people never changed their tank water...yuck!

As AP says, I'm sure it's much less of a problem these days, what with modern filtration, regular water changes, etc.
