Old Filter?

Hi, I bought a new tank a week ago today. I set it all up using the water from my old tank and substrate and plants etc... I also put the old filter in aswell as the new one which came with the tank. Its a 36' x12' x 12'. My question is this: Is it now okay to take the old filter out ( after a week)? as my brother wants to come and pick up the old tank which i am giving him. Thx.

Has there been fish in there?

If not, then now the 'old' filter is not even any good as all the bacteria would have died off....

yeah sorry, all the old fish went str8 in aswell, an there has been no casualtys.

need to leave it 2-4 weeks to be sure the new filter can take over fully IMO.
