I am pretty new to the whole tank/aquarium thing. When I was younger I had some but my mom did most of the work. I have a 75 gallon aquarium. In it I have 4 swordtails 3 females 1 male, 3 goldfish, and a betta. A few days ago I bought some plants to grow in there. I am still waiting for them to grow. I have a heater, 2 filters and a hood light and a air pump. I also have some start right stuff, quick cure and clear water stuff.

Now for my questions:
I keep seeing people saying the stats of thier tanks. What do i need to get to check the stats? What other things do I need for in my tank? Any advice would be great.

Thank You
Leslie

just a few things,
goldfish cant be kept with tropicals. they will nip there fins and the main reason is that goldfish need temps 70º and less and tropicals need 75º+ so they really cant be kept together.
another thing, your plants will probably not grow well because your goldfish will eat them. this is normal because goldfish need plants in there diet. so you cant plant the aquarium.

for your questions,

for checking water stats you will need a master test kit. the liquid ones. they usualy run about $30.00.
you will aslo need to do water changes every week. take 30% of the water out and put fresh ( declorinated) water back in. this is critical so make sure you do it. so you will need a siphon to do this efficiantly. a "python" makes it alot easer.

I have had my goldfish with my swordtails since I got the swordtails and have not had a single problem with them. In fact they all swin together like they are all the same kind of fish. I do have a python. Is the name of the kit actually "master test kit"? What do I need to get in case it shows my levels are off? What are the proper levels? Or does it tell me on the kit?
Thank You again
Leslie

There are overlaps of temperatures that tropical and coldwater fish can survive in together. This does not mean you should keep them in these overlapping temperatures. Putting them in these ranges of temperatures will shorten life expectancy greatly. For tropicals, heaters should be used. Even in warm weather, the temperature between night and day can vary quite a bit, which causes stress on the fish. Aquariums generally are not large enough to control swings in temperature.

and warm temps for goldfish will lead to many dieses and growth deformatys

Please do not post if you don't know what you are talking about. I've seen a few of your posts that are utter tripe.

You can try keeping the plants in, And if the goldfish eat them then theres nothing you can do, But I doubt they will.

It seems like we're beating a dead horse. Goldfish and tropicals can survive in overlapping temperature conditions. This does not mean they should be kept in these conditions as they are not ideal for either type of fish.

They will most certainly be more susceptible to disease in non optimal conditions. You will also be shortening their life spans by putting them in non optimal conditions.

Goldfish will eat 90% of plants out there. They won't eat most Swords, Lilies, or Onion Plants. I've seen them eat just about everything else though.
