Hi,

I'm soon going to be starting a 30 gallon tank. I love the look of planted tanks and I'd really like to make it that way. It will probably be a sand substrate with some gravel here and there.

Other then trying to figure out which plants i'd like (why can't they just have simple names???? haha) I don't really understand how to make a planted tank?
Someone once told me it's really complicated and you need like a layer of gold foil or something? haha i'm pretty sure that's not quite true from what i've read.
I've read about things like "laterite" (however it's spelled) or different fertillizers, but i don't really understand what they are and where they come from and how to add them and what kind of maintenance is required. Could someone explain what these substrates/fertillizers are exactly and where you get them?

Basically a step by step type description of how you would go about making a planted tank is what i'm after. nothing real detailed just so i understand how i would go about doing this. Also, i really don't think i want to get into co2 because i don't think i'll have the time or money for it, so is a planted tank still going to work out well?

Does anyone know a good place to get driftwood? i'd really like that as well but i don't think my lfs sell it.

Thanks a lot for your time!
