There! ;0)
In one of my tanks, I have 3 black moors and 3 shrimps. The tank is a 10gal, but yesterday I was doing a 100% water change and moved them all to my 45gal for a little while. Well, I checked on them, they were fine and getting on well with all the other fishees. It took me over an hour to clean out the tank, and then we popped out. When we came back, the lights had switched off (they're on timers) but I could still see them and they were fine. This morning, lights came on, and I WOZ SHOCKED! One of my beautiful angels were dead, and he was hardly recognisable but the only reason I could tell it was him was because of the shape. Also, two of my shrimps have disappeared and the one that was left was being chased around. Two of my black moors were fine, I netted one of them and the shrimp, put them back in their 10gal and then went back. I could only see 1 black moor left. He was swimming round quite happily, playing in the plants and bubbles from the air pump. He was determined not to come out, but eventually I caught him and plopped him back into his 10gal. Back to the 45gal, I saw the last black moor. :( Not good.
He was swimming on his side, half his tail gone, a chunk of skin or something missing from his eye, and the gouramis were pecking at him. He looked so miserable I nearly cried. I easily got him out, but instead of putting him back in his 10gal, he is in a jug next to me, which I have treated with Protozin. I don't know if it will do much good but I'm so worried I don't know what to do. Should I add some salt? Though I don't have proper aquarium salt, and I'm not sure whether it's ok to add normal table salt, is it?
Please help me and my poor little guy. He's sort of floating at the top of this jug, and the only way I know he's still alive is that his gills are moving. He's covered in bubbles too. They look lime whitespot, but they're definatley not.
:-(

Don't add normal table salt. Do you have sea salt? The iodine in table salt is toxic. As soon as you can get sea/aquarium salt, do a salt dip with (I think) 5tbsp of salt per gallon. Don't leave him in there more than 30mins.

i suggest you read the pinned topics in the Coldwater section about keeping goldfish inthe aquarium :)

and what fish are in the 45gal?

DD

Dont add tablesalt, this contains chemicals to prevent it clumping together which are not good for your fish.

A jug is not suitable to use as a hospital tank, really you should have a hospital tank with its own filtration or treat the fish in the tank it usually dwells in. From the sounds of things euthanasia would be the kindest option.

Why was you doing a 100% water change? Unless its a dire emergency the most water that should ever be changed is 50% otherwise you risk killing the fish by altering the chemistry too much.

:-( Well, he died. Poor little fella.
Thanks for replying guys.
The hospital tank is in use at the moment, and I didn't actually have to do an 100% water change, I just took the water and the fish out but kept the water in a bucket, then cleaned the tank. Then I cleaned all the decorations, and put the plants and water back in.
And the other fish that are in the 45gal are platys, guppies, bronze corys, angels, gouramis, rams and red scats. Oh, and two plecs.
As I only have 2 black moors and 1 shrimp left in that tank, I will buy two more on Tuesday to keep them company.
Thanks again for replying. :)
I'm just sorry there was nothing else I could do. :byebye: R.I.P.

EDIT: And at least I didn't have to do euthanaisa. I wouldn't be able to face killing a poor little innocent fish.

R.I.P. Sorry for your loss.

Aren't black moors like goldfish? You shouldn't have one in a ten gallon tank, much less 2 or 4.

Sorry for your loss. :(

20 gallons for one goldfish and 10 for each additional fish.

Scats are brackish fish.

:byebye: Sorry to read about your losses i know it can crack you up when you lose your fish, it does me. Sorry :-(

Best wishes Shanna

:-( Well, came home today and there's another one dead! They all seem to be fine and then suddenly just die on me. So now there's only 1. And a shrimp. Oh, I found another shrimp in my 45gal, but haven't actually been able to catch him yet! Anyway, I know the general rule is only 1 goldie to each 20gals or something, and then 10gals for each additional goldie, but what size does that actually apply too? My one is under an each at the moment. When they get bigger they will go in the pond, but would it be a good idea to add him a friend? Or does the 20gals apply to any size of goldie? :/
:D

They grow very quickly if in the right size tank so leave him/her alone until it's big enough to go in the pond.
