Hey everyone

I think I've finally gotten my first case of whitespot. Culprit could be new fish (2 platies, one of which died seemingly for no cause) introduced bout 2 weeks ago.

On a couple of my platies I've noticed maybe 3 or 4 spots on their tails that look like grains of salt. They've also all been clamping and flicking more (for some reason, my platies seem to go through bouts of flicking on and off). Also noticed one of my cardinals flick (never seen that before). On a close examination, I can't see spots on the cardinals or cories, but there could be ONE spot on my pearl (it's kinda hard to tell).

Just want to check that my diagnosis is correct, and that I'm right to treat with Waterlife Protozin with a FULL DOSE. My filtration is a UGF an an Aquaclear 50 Hob, fish are platies (4), cardinal tetras (10), bronze/albino cories (4) and a pearl gourami. These fish should be ok with full dose? Should I just follow the instructions exactly (dose day 1, 2, 3, 6) or is there anything extra I should be doing?

Is there anything else I should do to supplement this med? I have some salt here (but worried about cories) as well as Melafix, Pimafix, Sterazin and Myxazin.

Should I be doing water changes while treating (more/none?). The weekly change (bout 20%) is due on Wednesday. Does the med stay concentrated in the water (e.g. add extra if I do a water change) or just adding the normal dose fine?

*edit* Oh, am I supposed to turn the temperature up too??? For how long?

Thanks guys.

Ok, since I didn't want to go to bed and do NOTHING (for fear of waking up to fish so covered in spots I can't tell what colours they are anymore :p)I went back to CFC's sticky thread. I just did a 45-50% water change, and cranked the heater up to 29 degrees. It was 26 before. I really hope that won't freak my cories out too much. I'll leave it an hour then add the full dose (my empty tank capacity is 148L, the dosage says 5ml per 150L, so accounting for gravel displacement etc I'll make it just below the 5ml line). It says to use the standard dose when using UGF or external power filter, and well, I have both!
I'm pretty sure I have none of the species it says not to use for. I spotted one lone fry when I was changing but I'm sure he's a goner anyway, meds or no meds.

It says Protozin 1 Double Strength on the bottle, but I still assume the dosage instructions are the standard regardless. Again, if I should go outside the instructions on the bottle (e.g. treat for longer) someone please let me know. It jsut seems from what I read on the board some people get told to treat for longer than the bottle recommends.

If I'm doing something wrong can someone PLEASE comment with what else to do quickly! Or, if I am doing the right thing, tell me for my own peace of mind.

Use full dose of the waterlife med, increase aeration.
Don't forget to remove black carbon if you use it.
Good luck.

Thanks for the clarification Wilder! :good:

Ok
Today is Day 4, according to the instructions, after 1,2,3 I'm not sposed to dose again until Day 6. A lot of the spots have disappeared, but there are a few lingering still at this point. After treating day 6, what should I then do?
I.e.
When should my next water change be, should I make it extra big?
Am I likely to have to repeat the cycle? If so, what day should I start that on after the first one finishes?
