After being pleased about my tank staying Nitrite free for 6 days, I decided to add a few shrimp into my tank. I raced to the LFS on Friday and saw some awesome bamboo shrimp. I asked the LFS about these and he said they would be fine for my tank, so I bought two. After getting home and introducing them to my tank (to which they seem quite happy at the moment) I started to do some research into them. They live best in tanks with strong currents and will eat continuously and if there is not enough food they will dig in the substrate (which apparantly is a bad thing).

Well guess what, mines sifting the substrate. So what do I do? Can I add a type of food that it will be able to eat? Can it survive without a current? Please let me know sooner rather than later as if its going to be a problem, I need to take these shrimp back or give them to my friend.

Thanks guys.

nitrite free ?

i had bamboo shrimp.. and i shouldnt say this, but they survived of there own free will, i changed the water now and again, avoided copper and chucked in a bit of food when i remembered... sounds awful i know, but didnt lose any and the cherries they were with bred like crazy

research is crucial as you know..but dont beat your self up over anything.. you`ll chuck in the towel in no time that way.. its a learning curve

if poss can you move the filter outlet pipe above water level? to get some movement.. i had mine in a 28l with a fluval1 above the water..worked for me
they ( all shrimp) will graze ..all day long.. get some shrimp pellets ( hikari are good) if youve missed the shops now, then just crumble up a bit of fish food.. a small amount

shelagh xxx

Bamboo shrimp are filter feeders, ie they take tiny food particules from the water, so you dont really need to add extra food, they feed off the leftovers. I doubt they are diggin in the substrate, just using their feelers to find any left over stuff on the bottom.

Well obviously some food in there is a good idea, but mine never touched shrimp pellets, they just constantly sat taking stuff from the water column.

minx and shelagh, how long did yours live for (or how long have they been living for)?
