ok so im new i have a cycled tank and 1 male guppy in the tank im plannig on getting a female 2morow and today i had my hands in the tank cause i was not sure where would be the best place to put the filter

and now i just noticed some oil type tink on the surface i dont tink it has any afect to the guppy

im sure that it might be lip palm cause i have dry lips i got some on my hands

will the guppy be ok? should i do a small water change cause i changed the water last night should i try getting some oil out ? how ? well i think it is oil not sure? what alse cold it be?

help plz

some foods can leave an oily type residue on the waters surface. if its defo not from food then try a water change and add some carbon to the filter to remove any contaminants :good:

i have nutrafin flake food i think i see some oil when i fed him but not that much i fed him 1 or 2 flakes 3 times a day could that be the prob i think i might just do like 10 % change

thisis my fist fish and i only got him last day andi dont whant to loose him

3 times a day maybe too much. most people feed once a day. ive never used that brand food so not sure...

mh it might be the food cause i had the tank cycling i had my hands in the tank more then once and i dont remember seeing the oil

i have some tetra Pleco Wafers would the guppy eat the wafers?

it might have a nibble at them but im sure it would prefer the flake as a staple diet. maybe treat it to some brine shrimp or blood worms once or twice a week to try and vary its food intake a bit

do you think i should do a water change?

if the fish is happy enough then maybe not, although a small one wont take long for piece of mind. if there is something in the water thats a contaminent and irritating the fish then im sure it would be obvious as the fish would be flashing against objects in the tank

he seems normal but i will just do a small 1 to calm me down

A paper towel on the surface will take care of the oil, this is common when feeding higher protein foods.

so i just dip the paper towel in and it will absorb the oil ?

Lay it flat on the surface & take it out. It's not something I usually worry about myself unless the tank has very little surface motion.

oh ok i feed it nutrafin max food it says that it is 46.5% of protein

i have a nother Q to ask:

So i have a 1 guppy in the tank i got him friday and he seems shy he would stay in one corner behind the filter when there is people ( most of the time) around and he would sometimes swim around in the tank when there is no1 in the room ( but whene there is food in the tank he eats it like a little monster and it does not matter if there is people in the room ) i think it is normal cause he is not used to the new home is it normal? i will prob be getting a new tank mate but i dont think it will be a guppy im thinking maybe a platy or a molly ( my local pet shop has no female guppies at the moment) do you think it will get used to the new home faster if it has a friend in the tank?

that was the only guppy they had when i bought it i was going to go for a platy but then i sow him with 3 difrent type of fish who seemed to be bullys

so i went and got it he has torn back fin i really wanna see him live and be happy he is my first fish

evrything seems to be fine :D

the guppy has bin alone in the tank for a few days and he seems grand :D

today i went and got a male and female swordtails and the guppy seems really happy now

and he started mating with the female swordtail which is not really wanted :/
