Our tank has been established two years. Have two fish in there, one an angel and one a puffer.
Two weeks ago my puffer went off his food. Checked the water Ammonia high and Nitrates and Nitrites.
We have an external filter we always rinse the media in tank water and have had no big problems up til now.
The local fish shop agreed to take my puffer for a holiday until I had got the problems under control.
Have done 20% water changes (with ammo lock for chlorine) and have monitored the situation.
The Ammonia levels are still very high and the same with nitrates and nitrites. The angel seems on thewhole to be OK he's eating OK and everything but I am at a loss to know what to do next. I can't get my puffer back until it's OK.

Can anyone help?
I'm at my wits end and am considering selling my fish and giving up.
Thanks
Andy :(

wow that's very weird for an established tank to have a complete crash like that.
Have you changed anything at all (or added medication / a different dechlorinator etc.) over the past while or so ?

The only thing I can think of was that we changed the pipes that go from the filter to the tank because the other ones were clogging up. They are from the local fish shop, exactly the same as the old ones. Apart from that I can't think of anything. Any advice???

At this stage, apart from water changes, ammo locks and gravel vacs, I'm afraid I don't :/

How regularly do you check your filter media and rinse it ? Is it an external filter ?

I check the filter medium once a week if it's very mucky I clean in a bucket of tank water.
It's a big external filter with rocks and filter floss.

:) I have used Bio-Spria with good success when my tank had a bad cycle. The tank was very mature and fully stocked. Then ammonia showed up and for reason that I could think of. Have you checked your ph level.
