The filter in my Rena tank blew this afternoon, nicely timed so I wouldn't be able to make the shops (my local Pets@ having just shut). :grr:

Some of you may remember that this is the 25 ltr hospital/retirement tank that houses 3 juvenile platies (1 deformed) and 1 guppy; the latter having been rehomed after she was aborting in the main tank and being bullied by my other adult female guppy. I thought then that the bullying was only due to Sarah being poorly and now that I've nursed her back to full health have been thinking for a long time that I ought to return her to main tank where she can have room to stretch her fins and company of her own kind.

Oh dear, it was not to be  I did everything I could, transferred them gently, acclimatised, distracted current residents with some food. Silverdot, permanent resident and bully, took one look and went straight for her, ignoring the other newcomers. She just would not leave the poor thing alone. I went down to supper; when I came back Sarah had a big chunk missing from her tail. She was pale and looked absolutely awful, as if she'd been ill for days. I lowered my netting jug and she shot straight into it, it was as if she understood that I'd come to take her away. Sarah is spending the night in an unfiltered tank (thankfully I did a big water change this afternoon). New water change tomorrow morning and then I'm off to get a replacement filter, and some more Melafix. Poor lass, but I really don't think she would have lasted the night with her old buddy. And those two used to be the best of friends.... :(

The good news is, Sarah perked up as soon as she got "home" again. She is already at the surface looking for food. In a few days, I may put her platy friends back in as well, at least Bobbin, the deformed one.

But that's put paid to my plans of moving all the female livebearers in together when I get my big tank. :/ 1
Oh, I do hate it when my children fight....

Ouch, sounds nasty! Some fish just aren't good community fish, unfortunatly. Sorry to hear it didn't work out. :(

It might work in the big tank, it's hard to say. Sometimes space makes a difference...more territory to go around. :)

It's strange as Silverdot is fine with all other fish; it's like she remembers Sarah and just can't stick her. Or, more likely, she can't cope with another adult female guppy; she doesn't mind the young ones or the platies. Territorial female guppies, eh?

Anyway, I've been out to buy a new filter now; even if the bacteria may have died off on the sponge, I have a spare sponge floating in one of my main tanks, so I should be able to clone it. Sarah so far seems no worse for a night in a stagnant tank. I did do another water change this morning and have been agitating the water to oxygenate it. Unfortunately, the awkward shape of the tank means I can't fix an airstone without pinning her to the wall with her current. So I'd better get the filter up and running now. I'll leave it a few days before I bring her platy friends back to give her a bit of recovery time.

It's funny, because you don't really think of female Guppies being territorial fish, but this just goes to show. Did she grow up with Sarah, or did you buy her as an adult? Just out of curiosity. :)

I bought the two of them, with a male a year ago; I would say Silverdot was fully adult and Sarah just reaching maturity then. The male died, but the two females stayed in the same tank and were best friends, they and the female platy I had then, until an outbreak of bacterial infection in the tank in September. The platy was hospitalised and later died, and shortly after that Sarah started aborting her fry, taking several days over it and looking very poorly, bent tail and slow reactions. This is when Silverdot started attacking her, so I assumed it was nothing personal, just the normal attacking of a sick individual. I moved Sarah to the hospital tank for her to die in peace But she didn't, after a few weeks she had fully recovered so I moved a deformed platy in with her to keep her company and they've got on perfectly ok. She has been in the hospital tank ever since, until I tried to move her back the day before yesterday and all hell broke loose.

Poor Sarah, she's still not quite out of the wars: the filter I bought her has too strong a current and is non-adjustable, so she is crouching in a corner- last thing she needs at the moment. Fortunately, the shop are happy to swap filters, so hopefully by tomorrow night she can be comfortable, and hopefully I can soon move her platy friend back.

Sarah's dead this morning. She was my office fish and I loved her. And this time it was my fault. She was a strong healthy fish, if I had got into a taxi to Pets@home straightaway and got a filter, she would still be alive.

Awwww, I'm so sorry! Don't beat yourself up too much over it, we all make mistakes. It doesn't mean you are any less of a good fish keeper. *hugs* :(
