I've recently gotten some new furniture that has accent lighting. While I can choose several lighting colors I mostly use lilac/purple. I'm thinking about seeing how a black light would look in a table lamp.

I know that the high ultra violet of a black light can harm fish eyes even to the point of blinding. The light would NOT be part of the tank lighting but would be in a lamp on an end table ~5.25 feet away from the tank. The lamp also has a shade. The black light would, also, not be high intensity. Would this be safe for my fish? If not I'll just go with a low wattage light purple bulb as this lamp is mostly an accent light as it is too close to one of my displays to have any but low wattage lighting.. In either case the bulb would be either incandescence or LED... Hmmm, I guess a twisted florescence is also possible but I haven't seen one on my casual searches.

You're turning your place into a hippy pad  Next thing ya know you'll be putting up black light sensitive glowing wall art.
LOL! Actually it would just be another accent light regardless if a black light or light purple. The lamp is really too close to the screen I normally use for my computer to use a bulb to do real room lighting. Also, even though blind in my right eye it is still sensitive to light input hence I keep my place on the dim side. The lamp just looks good on the end table. ;)

Actually, as to black light wall stuff, I always did like the old black velvet paintings that were black light sensitive but not gonna happen. ;)

From 5 feet away, a black light (UV) is not going to harm the fish but could increase the risk of sunburn and skin cancer to people or animals near the light.
Your best bet is to get a purple coloured light globe instead of a black light.

I would worry about my eyesight. Since having cataract surgery and my natural, UV blocking lenses replaced with synthetic, non-UV blocking lenses I am now at increased risk of macular degeneration from UV in sunlight. Maybe I'm paranoid about this but after several eye conditions with the potential for blindness I won't take chances.

Hello jay. I would stick to lighting that's designed for use with an aquarium. That way there's no guessing if the light will work or not. Creativity can be a good thing when you're setting up the aquascaping, but not so much when it comes to tank lighting.

Not sure that I understand. Why would I use aquarium lighting in an end table lamp 5.25 feet away from the tank? :dunno:

Thanks all for the input. :)

go for it, guess you already have the strings of beads hanging from the doorways.
actually, back in the day, I liked beaded doorways. Since brought up I could see a beaded doorway between my living room and bedroom but not worth removing the door plus my cockatiel is free to roam around all day and I'd have to turn off the ceiling fan. ;)

Would be safer for the fish?
OK, I see what you are saying but, since I'm not going to go with a black light, I still really don't get it. I mean what is the difference between a plain purple light in a table lamp over 5 feet from the tank and the lights in my ceiling fan or kitchen lights?

I misread his post mate and got confused. I understand now! I get your point :)
