Ocellated Laprologus

What do you need to know?

Ocellatus get to 2 1/2 inches are aggressive need at least 2 shells per fish like a pH of 8.6 tank should preferably be atleast 15 gallons for sure. If you want to breed them the only way to know their sex is that when full grown the male will be significantly larger than the female. :)

Any other questions just ask.

these fish do not need to be adults to sex...

I have 2 tank full of juveniles and they are easy to sex by the dorsal fin.

I wrote an article about my breeding experiences, you can read it here

here is a picture of a female. notice the white edge to here dorsal fin, males do not have the white edge.

i have 6 of these little guys right now...all under an inch and they are peaceful as any other fish i've ever had right now.

they will all be moving to a 30 gallon in a week or so with at least 2-3 shells a piece.

they are really neat to watch. they like to rearrange a tank...even little guys like mine have already buried some of the shells in the tank..

really fun little fish.

most people say that you can keep a single breeding pair in a 10 gallon tank....and what DanL said about sexing them is entirely true......females have white edges on their dorsal fins and males have an none.

:)

Wow, thanks for the replies guys, very helpful :)

I was wondering if you would know if it was safe to keep these with a couple of red shouldered peacocks - Aulonocara hansbaenschi?

I personally would say 15gallon minimum for a breeding pair of occelatus, you would be better off with 1 male and 2 females though.
