Just wondering.....

I've got a couple of rocks, slates, clay tiles and a flower pot. Will it be OK to use large rocks from the beach (if cleaned very well).

Thanks,

Irf.

i wouldnt do it personally because there could be pollution in that part of the ocean. and some rocks have metal ions in them which can be hard to see to the untrained eye. these metal ions are really really bad for the water and the fish.

Click on the link on rocks in my signature. Very informative article on rocks, and should answer your question.

I`d say yes just check them over using the info in the CF article above, power wash them , then boil them for over 20mins if they seem ok.

I've done this with no problems, using granite. Granite is not porous (so nothing seeps in) and rarely has metallic seams because of the type of rock that it is. Looked amazing, and was a lot cheaper than buying the "real thing". A 200 gallon tank with bits of rock a anything up to 60 cm long looks very impressive.

So, depends on the rock. Boiling rocks is pointless, because sea creatures (even parasites) will die in freshwater, and boiling has no effect on pollution like oil. Check if the beach is clean enough to collect seafood on: if it is, that's your answer.

Cheers,

Neale

Hi Nick Sw,

Are the rocks in the cauldron pic the ones from B&Q? For some reason the previous pic won't display for me.

If so then I might go there instead of making a trip to the coast. They look perfect. Any B&Q of just a larger one? Approx cost?

Thanks,

Irf.

Popped into a B&Q Warehouse yesterday on my way home, but all they had were bags of large pebbles (which they call cobbles). They might be OK, but I wanted a few unusual ones as well. On their site (www.diy.com) they have some nice stuff, but where to buy them? I'll call them today.....
