Water test kits are expensive and cunningly designed, through number of drops required, so that the different tests don't run out at the same time so that you buy individual tests which will be more expensive than a whole kit.

I have adopted the (stunningly) obvious way of making the higher usage kits last longer. I have a small medical syringe (available from vets), total volume 1ml, and use it to measure out a smaller, but highly accurate volume of water and adjust the number of drops of chemical accordingly.

For example my API Master Kit uses three drops for pH testing but the ammonia uses eight and the nitrate, ten.

I can't believe that, just after I posted this thread I read someone else has posted almost exactly the same thing. Weird. 1ml syringes are best though.
