Hi everyone ,
Just a question to throw in the pot for you . Has anyone tried an ozone unit on their planted tank ? Would / does it work ? What are the implications ? My mate has a huge 8 x 2.5 x 2.5 marine tank and has one of these units fitted , You can watch the tv through it across the room from one end to the other . I asked him about it and he said that it zaps all the bad stuff in the tank like parasites and algae spores . So that got me thinking about this question that i throw to you guys . I know that ozone is obviously oxygen based which is bad for the plant growth , but wouldnt it be good for the algae . Anyways just thought i would ask to see if anybody had tried it or to find out any reasons why it wouldnt work . Must keep us thinking about these things . :)

Doubt it would be 'good' for algae as its only oxygen and algae (and plants for that matter) don't really use oxygen to the same extent. Yes, yes I know they use it at night, but its the carbon in the CO2 that's most important.

I would have to question the need for it? Sounds like an expensive bit of kit that one, could you not use a VU steraliser? TBH mate, these 'bug killer' things, whilst good, need lots of maintenance (well from what Ive heard), cost lots, need parts replacing regularly and will never be a substitue for good aquarium husbandry

Dont suppose this has helped much, just my thoughts :)

Hi sam , the unit works in conjunction with a protien skimmer and it produces a gas that gets injected into the venturi of the skimmer thats how it works , but it has a sterilizing effect on anything it touches . He said that you can put a fish in his tank which is covered in ich and it will kill everything within hours and his fish stock casualties have been nearly nothing over the time he has had the unit . Currently he has 60 fish with large tangs which are prone to disease . Its just an idea to combat the algae spores which can be very diverse with different growth requirements . The idea was that if it was a plausable method then you would never need to worry about there ever being an outbreak of algae or disease ever again , because as soon as you would see signs of either you would switch on this system and hey presto job done . It definately needs a skimmer though , which i personally think will be bad due to the injection of water and obviously the skimming effect of the water taking out nutrients , but the plus side could be usefull .
