What substrates are appropriate for NW cichlid setups? Is sand feasible, or does it present a problem with New Worlds? What about gravel? What are the pros and cons?
What type of substrate is best and which do you prefer? Please comment!

I've never had sand in any of my tanks, so I have a stupid question to ask: is it hard to use a gravel vac without sucking up the sand? Will a vac remove the fish waste but not the sand, or what?

Sorry, my mistake. I didn't think to check earlier posts, and I'm not a regular of the New World portion of the forums. Again, sorry about that.

no problems, sand is a bit trickier to vac up, you are going to lose an amount of sand but I found that by holding the vac near the surface of the sand but not on it I was able to vac up the waste with minimal amounts of sand being lost.
