I have set my Nutrafin CO2 system up using the supplied sachets, and it's fair to say that bubbles are not excatly flying out. I have bought some yeast and bicarb as suggested elsewhere on this forum, so will give that a whirl, but what sort of rate of bubbles should I be expecting? 1 a second, 1 a minute or what?

Alan

i use the following mixture

allinsons baking yeast, granulated sugar, bicarbonate of soda.

sugar to the first fins

1 tsp bicarb on top of the sugar

then put 1/2 tsp yeast in a mug and half fill with luke warm water, stir and dissolve yeast

pour yeast solution into cannister

top up with luke warm (not hot) water to about 2cm short of the top fins, stir and do up the lid really tight. if it froths let the foam die down before closing.

after 30 mins you will see bubbles.

it takes about 24 hours for the bubble rate to get going properly i then get a bubble in every 2nd run of the ladder or about a bubble every 3 seconds for 5/7 days.

mine give out about 1 every 5 secconds or so, tho i am gonna change its got a compressed gas system soon as its not big enough for my tank lol, or i have just get another 2 nutrafin systems.

Thats the mixture I was intending to try-thanks. Do you keep the canister warm in anyway? I have mine hanging on the back of the tank-so expect that to maintain a reasonable temp.

i put it in a thick welly boot sock but as long as it's not really cold it should be fine. by the sounds of it yours will be warmer than mine so i wouldn't worry.

My mix is fill the first fin of the canister of sugar then add about 1/2 teaspoon of baking yeast then add luke warm water until the second fin of the canister then close the lid tightly...I'll will get a lot of bubbles about an hour later(just air no co2 yet) then I get about 1 bubble per second after 24 hours or so...this will last for a couple of days and then slow down to 1 bubble per 3 second then I'll change the mixture again....I'm refilling about every 4 days....Just wonderin if anybody does the re charge like me or do you guys actually change it till the bubbles run out???

I find I have to redo the mix every 4 days or so. But it's rather cold up here and I don't get much extra heat, even if the canister is near the tank. I am happy when I get 1 bubble per 2 seconds, when it gets lower than that, I feel it needs to be changed. Of course when a snail gets in the way of the bubble ladder then I get really :grr:

I have set up my nutrafin c02 2 weeks ago, and it took about 3 days to get the bubbles going right, but now i have 3 bubbles evenly spaced on the ladder at anytime.

I run 2 separate units at a time. I change one per weekend. As one slows down the other is fresh and is picking up the slack. I think it helps me keep a more steady CO2 level. I've used it with and without the bicarbonate and noticed no difference at all. I use 1/2 tsp of yeast and the first set of rungs of sugar. Warm water to the top set of fins.

You only need to use bi-carb if your kh is low below 2 degrees i think just to prevent the ph from crashing, my kh is aroung 4 degrees and I found that the bi-carb creates a foamy stuff that could get stuck on the ladder and prevent bubbles from coming up....lol...
