Following the soon to be trend, here is my ongoing journal for my PFK Aquacube, a 5 gallon 12" cube aquarium as supplied through a PFK magazine subscription.

I've never setup a fully aquascaped tank before, with previous attempts pretty much being plants and a few rocks. I am taking design inspiration from the roadside landscapes which I see whilst driving around Northumberland, some are surprisingly beautiful, I hope to capture something of them with this tank.

I am not currently planning additional light, nor CO2, though I will be using Seachem Flourish Excel, Flourish and Eco-complete substrate. The tank will be heated, though as yet I am unsure of the livestock.

Images are running off my own server via good old broadband so please be patient: if they don't display try again later, sometimes the connection can be flaky!

So, first off, here is the tank, background and rocks before anything starts going in:

The background was stuck to the back of the tank: it is double-sided black/blue, for now I have used the black since this is closer to the landscapes which are providing the design ideas. I can swap it over easily if it doesn't work.

I then added some rocks, bought from a LFS, at present the lack of substrate means I can't build up the height of these as I plan to. I aim to slope the EC quite heavily towards the back right and have it 'fall over' the rocks down to the front left and right of the tank.

Rocks in place:

I have some oak twigs which need dried out etc, for now here are two purely for the sake of it!

I have done some golden rule planning on paper, though as yet I haven't worked this into the tank in any way. Until substrate arrives I can't really do anything but get a rough idea of how things will work. The EC should hopefully arrive tomorrow, once this is here I can move on a bit. In the mean time I am going to sort out the twigs and dry them in the oven for a good while.

Nice to see another PFK nano journal.

I like the idea of using your experiences for the aquascape, it is a technique becoming more popular and worthwhile IMO.

I look forward to seeing the progress.

Some great looking rocks there mate, spent ages over the last few weeks looking for decent rocks! Like the sound of the layout, and the rock formation you have in the 2nd (middle) pics looks nice too :) What are your plans for plants?

Sam

I like it from what I can see from those two pictures. I have the same type of rock as was in those photos, they look very natural, being so unique in their shapes. They look very good interspersed between plants as well.

Amano seems to create natural landscapes, not sure with what inspiration , but I think the 2 month gap between subscribing and actually getting the tank has helped. I like considering things for as long as possible! If it were safe I'd have taken some photo's of the landscapes!

I saw the rocks not long after I set up my other tank, 6 months ago. Unfortunately it was too late to use them so I remembered them for future reference. They have a nice strata effect, I am going to keep the linearity of this all in the same direction to try and make them all look like part of the same underlying structure. There are currently only two 'formations' at present, the picture does make it look like there are three though!

Plant wise:

Back-left: some fine leaved plants, I think something like Cardamine Lyrata
Back-right: unsure if I will continue Cardamine Lyrata behind the oak twigs or whether I will go for something else. I will probably initially use this and see how it works. Trying to go for a kind of dense tree idea thingy.

I have some Pellia Moss (Monosolenium tenerum) in my other tank which I got so I could grow it on a bit before adding it to the aquacube. This looks kind of bush-like, I may use this in front of some of the rock formations.

I would like some Amazon Frogbit (Limnobium laevigatum) which is a floating plant: I will let the oak twigs stick above the surface slightly, the frogbit will hopefully gather around the twigs, with the long roots possibly looking like dangling foliage.

Depending on overall foliage size, I may go for one of the anubias varieties, not sure on this just yet though!

From nature. Japan is filled with beautiful landscapes and water features etc. His Nature Aquarium World Book One is a great book for explaining the whole concept. There's also next month's PFK...

I more mean why does he choose the landscapes he does? Is it a case of 'ooh that is nice' or 'This one reminds me of where I visited when I was 10'...I'll await next months issue!

Well, I left work at 1:15pm, didn't the Eco-complete arrive at 1:45pm! Ah well, it'll have to wait until Monday!

Plants are ordered:

Floating: Hemianthus Micranthemoides
Foreground-ish: Anubias Nana
Background: Cardamine Lyrata

I will probably put some Monosolenium tenerum in aswell from my other tank if I think it will work well. All plants, as usual for me, from www.tropical-aquarium-plants.co.uk, I did check Greenline this time but they are much more expensive and I have always been very happy with plants from t.a.p. so no reason to change!

I saw some pygmy corydoras in the shop I got the rocks from last night. Having never seen them before (aside from piccies) I was wishing my tank was set up! They are so cute, I could almost go for a pure pygmy corydoras set up! The filter sponge has been in the filter of my main tank for ~2 weeks now, so once planted I am likely OK to add the first fish...we'll see though, I was initially thinking of bumble-bee shrimp....

I've got a fair amount of those small rocks lying around, I'm tempted to dig them out now! :) They are sandstone though so be wary they are not entirely chemically inert.

Chris

Fair point, though I am hoping that since they were LFS supplied, someone else would have had problems by now!

One thing I have really noticed with this tank is how it feels so 'tall' in comparison with my other tank. Whilst both are the same height, this one has a real feeling of deep water....strange really, it was only when the rocks went in that I noticed! Could prove interesting given that the oak twigs may end up enhancing this, unsure yet if this is good or bad!

Nature Aquarium World Book One explains the inspiration for nearly every single tank, it is a VERY good book and also gives you layout and techniques :D . Well worth the money :good: .

Your tank is sounding very good, with all these planted aquacube journals going up, it makes me really anxious to start mine  .

It'll be exciting seeing all these PFK cube journals. I wish they had a give-away like that in the States. Sounds like a lovely tank, I'm thoroughly jealous right now. You aquascape sounds like it'll be quite fun and very pretty. Can't wait to see it completely realized.

I'm not liking the tank in the kitchen, however. Never did. Especially with these open-top tanks. A lot of people do this and unless you never cook, I really don't like the idea of all the oil and fumes from the kitchen getting into the tank, but then I cook a lot. In addition dish soap and other such chemicals are commonly kept in the kitchen, again not good. These chemicals can wreak havoc in a tank and so many things can go wrong. It's a light enough tank, I recommend moving it.

llj :)

Are the rocks inert? ooops, I never knew that, what affects do they have on the water? I've never noticed them change anything in my tank.

To be honest I doubt they'll have any noticeable effect really, given most peoples water change regime.

Nry, I've just began setting up my own cube now having seen you're rocks. Race you to the finish. :D
