Nothing to stir the sand?

I generally do mine about once a month, at the same time I do a water change. I don't stir so much as poke the sand. I have a terraced area that is full of slate and a PVC cave, and lot's of plastic plants. What I do is stir the small clear area then use a straw to poke around in the terraced section and around plants. My theroy is that if there are any pockets of gas I may poke them with the straw the gas will come out out of the water through the straw. Of course I have no idea if this would actually work, and really I shouldn't have a problem anyhow so it's probably a silly method for me to use. Poking or stirring with anything is fine. If you do it regularly you will not ever have enough gas built up to harm your fish.

If you don't mind a big fish, then an eartheater will stir your sand for you a treat. I have fine gravel in my tank, and he's constantly hoovering it up and spitting it out through his gills. Serves a practical purpose, and look funny!!!!!
