There are reportedly over 70 species in the Betta genus.
That is your great grandad's Betta - not if he was an aquarist, but one that was thriving when he was.
That sub-family of natural Bettas get large - over 10cm, and aren't bubble nesters like Betta splendens. They're mouthbrooders. They often come from moving waters, and their mouths (males raise the young) are their nests.
They're air breathers, like other Anabantoids.
I see a lot of my fishkeeping friends in Europe getting into wild type Bettas. They appeal to killie and dwarf Cichlid keepers. They take attention to detail, a little study of natural history and smart tank set ups to work. I've kept and bred a bunch of wild types, and would probably still keep them if I could find them. I haven't run across any interesting ones since I gave my albimarginata away prior to moving here. I didn't think they'd survive the move.
They're often not colourful, and really are fish for single species tanks, like killies. They'll never be popular as a result, but they are really fun to keep.
This is from Jos Vermeulen on Reddit. There's a bit more to Betttas than just splendens and its mutant varieties. Looking at it, over 35 years I kept 17 species of Bettas (not varieties or breeds - biological species). The species groups are more closely related species - very useful for trying to figure out set ups.
