ok so I've been waiting for this day for the last week, big moving day, I had to move my 20g tank from Raleigh to Greensboro (about an hour and a half or so) well I was really worried about the water getting to cold, and had the fish in a 5 gallon bucket, well I kept the heat nice and warm in the car as I felt I should since it was cold outside, I got home and to my horror the fish bucket was quite warm so I took off the lid to find 3 of my gold barbs dead and I dropped a thermometer in and the temp was 92 degrees, STUPID ME I left the bucket right next to the heater, so while every other bucket of water was fine this one got all the direct heat and it roasted (eerr boiled) them :-( I felt so bad so needless to say I got the fish out into a bowl and floated the bowl in one of the other buckets to even out the temp and bring it back down to about 85ish (originally was 80-82 before the trip) then I filled up my tank and got the fish in to the tank and everyone seems fine now (though the 2 remaining gold barbs were breathing rather heavy at first and that worried(worries) me but they seem better now) the 2 remaining gold barbs will not leave each others side at the moment though as I'm sure they're feeling a bit timid having their numbers cut by three, I felt so bad. So I'll have to keep a close eye on them for the next few weeks as I'm afraid all this temperature changing could have really stressed them out. I'm very proud of my ram though he's taking this like a trooper and seems just fine, never any heavy breathing or clamped fins or anything still seems like the same old guy to me, but only time will tell.

Summary: moved fish, afraid of cold, made sure car was very warm, bucket got too hot because it was right next to the heater in the car, 3 barbs ended up dead, everyone else has moved in and seems ok at the moment.

what I learned: should have listened to PT and had them bagged at the LFS and moved in a cooler but thought that my way would be ok instead and I didn't feel like going over to the fish shop to get it done, guess I'll know next time.

The lack of O2 would have been the cause of the remaining gold barbs breathing rather heavy at first. I'm sorry you lost your 3 gold barbs though it's a good thing the rest of your fish are alright. And at least now you know how to move your fish if you ever need to do so in the future again.

Whenever moving fish always bag them and place the bags in a cooler or poly box, it really is the only safe way to move fish.
