Hmm, how much do you know with stress and bettas? As in, how easily can stress actually kill a betta?

Stress can kill all fish.
But the thing is, your betta probably lived for at least some time in a cup, and bettas can be sent in the post! So it takes a lot to kill them by stress I'm sure he'll be fine till morning, just work on obstructing the other betta from view!

Agreeing with above... I think the biggest thing with stress that worries me is it can make them more susceptible to disease - like us getting "run down" I suppose. You are doing what you can though, I'm sure once you gte some more plants up against the divider things'll be ok again
