Not Sure If Apple Snails Are Dead Or Not Help Needed

hi all got apple snails from the lfs none of there heads were out,(were in there shells) asked the man if they were alive he said yes took them home bag smelt a little off put them in my fry tank and yet in the same posistion so could anyone tell me if there dead or not thanks....

how long have they been in their shells? I know it sounds a little disgusting, but when we've had snails die their muscles relax and their "trap doors" come open.

boy in the pet shop said they are alive because there trap doors were shut and they are still shut so dose this mean there alive

Yes, when mine died, their little shell doors open as well. They normally do smell funny since they're snails that live in water. The smell of a dead one is horrible! X_X

As said, the best way to tell when they're dead is by their smell, it'll almost make you sick. One of mine died few days back, it stayed in it's shell in the same position for ages, but it was still alive, just. It never moved though and eventually died.
