in my rekord 60 tank the 1st layer of filter is wool that u have 2 buy especially 4 the tank but as seeing as its just wool could u use cotton wall from normal shops??

No. It will clog loads and fall apart to easily. Not at all suitable. I personally try to avoid using wool in my filter and have a coarse and a fine sponge instead. These have a much longer life span and can just be rinsed out in tank water every 2 weeks or so as need be. Filter floss, whilst doing a great job of "polishing" the water and keeping it really clear just clogs up and needs throwing away too often for my liking.

:good:

ps You don't have to by the manufacturers own stuff. There are plenty of 3rd party manufacturers out there selling generic sized stuff that you can just cut to fit. Usually cheaper as well.

ok thanks 4 the info and quick reply :good:

can u recommend any particular brands?

for cheap ones get pond filter sponges and cut them to size :good:

that is exactly what i have done with one of my fluval 404's, i managed to get 6 layers of various sponges, getting finer as i went to the top, just have to work out what to put in the 2 empty layers in the other one now! :hyper: pond filter sponges cost me about £12 for reference :)
