Northerly winds forecast in my area next week and that means a drop in temperature, leaves are already starting to drop and the plants in the pond are starting to die back

Yes you got it winters on its way

Time to start thinking about last minute maintenance, cut back any dead growth on plants, arrange somewhere to store those non hardy plants such as water hyacinth and water lettuce, drag your pump out and give it a good old seeing too, netting is a good idea now for any ponds with over hanging trees, If leaves get in the pond and decay it will throw off the balance of a water and be harmful to the fish, you may even want to think about getting a pond vac in there and removing any build up of sludge, within another couple of weeks the fishes feeding will slow down as there metabolism slows down. When the temperature reaches the mid 60s you should start to feed less and maybe think about switching over to a wheatgerm mix, as it gets colder feed less and less, once below 50 most people will stop feeding full stop but on warmer days I like to chuck in a sprinkling of wheatgerm just in case

Start to think about whether your going to switch off filters and pumps personally I don’t I leave them running 365 24/7 but it pays to keep an eye on the weather just on the off chance that your going to get that really cold spell,

Start to think about protecting the fish as well the fish are slower and sluggish during the winter months and there’s been many a topic about cats and herons, you may not like netting but it can keep your fish alive during these cold spells when there susceptible to predators

This could do with being a pinned topic ,feel free to add into it

We keep our pump and filter running straight through the win ter, never had any trouble with it.

We still have lots of water lillies coming up,we also have a canna lillly in the pond,I think I have to take that out though and protect through the winter.

Good information you posted!

Our winters here dont get cold enough - most of the time the plants dont even die back until late January.
