I lost my male platy yesterday. He was in a 10g with 3 female platies, 2 swordtails. On saturday I noticed that a couple of the fish in my tank had the beginning of what looked like fin and tail rot. But this guy had that and what looked like cotton mouth. I seperated him and medicated the tank, medicating him seperatly. By sunday the fish in my tank looked 100 times better but the poor male platy looked bad. He was beginning to show symptoms of swim bladder disease, bloating, just floating at the top, and trying to swim forward but not going anywhere. When I got back from lunch on sunday his gills had begun bleeding and he had developed open sores on his head, another hour later he was dead. Was is just a horrible combination of dieseases that killed him, or something else? It worked so quickly!!!

Tank stats

:( I hate it when they die like that. We are encountering unexplained deaths in one of our guppy/platy tanks at the mo. You just have to do your best. Sorry about your fishy. :*

What did you medicate him and the other fish with? How long was the tank set up? What was the size of the other tank you moved him to and did it have filtration and heating plus how many gallons was it?

Guppy's and Platy's often have unexplained deaths,
If they are preggo and stressed they often die,
It's one of lifes mystery's i'm afraid

I agree, although they can be very sturdy little fish, then can also die very suddenly somtimes when it comes to desease- bacterial infections are very common in livebearers and can cause a huge range of symtoms, so its easy to medicate them incorrectly, bacterial deseases unfortunatly though can also kill very suddenly somtimes.

In my experience, pretty much all guppys or platys you buy will come with some sort of mild or serious bacterial infection, if you can, its extremely handy to have a quarentine tank to put them into for 2weeks as most deseases will show themselves within that time, so it will help prevent the fish passing the infection onto others while also making it easier to treat at the same time  .
