I know this will sound weird but has anyone ever tried to breed seahorses? Is it even legal or do you have to have a license?

I just love seahorses they're so dainty and the male doing the whole pregnancy thing oh yeahhhhh, if only that could be done with human males (mind you we'd probably become extinct if that was the case!) :p

There's a fish store near me that sells seahorses. Tank bred and raised. $89.99 each! They are really cute though.

Seahorses are among the most difficult of aquatic pets to keep.

Successfully maintaining syngnathids in an aquarium environment depends upon a high investment in time and financial resources. The need for live food cultures, frequent feeding and tank maintenance, combined with a high susceptibility to a range of bacterial and parasitic infections make seahorses generally unsuitable for all but the most committed hobbyist.

This site seems to have a goodly number of articles and an active forum on keeping and breeding seahorses: http://www.seahorse.org/

Suffice it to say, if you're not an expert aquarist, you should probably get some more experience before attempting to keep them.

Ahh cheers for that, I didn't mean I actually wanted to breed them myself I was just curious if anyone on here had done it or tried anyway.

Ah, my bad. No worries then...

You might want to ask in the marine section, since any seahorse keepers would spend a lot of time there. Not sure if any of them actually do keep seahorses, but they're a good subforum. Friendly folks.

I went to the Baltimore Aquarium last week and they had an entire tank full of seahorses and their babies. They were so small I thought 'hey look, brine shrimp' till I got closer.... It was just a massive cloud of them all over the place.
