I filled my tank up with warm tap water and popped my fish in. I know sound terrible but I didnt research anything. However my fish seem fine. The water has cleared, and they are eating plenty.
Ive added a few drops of water treater a couple of times buts thats all. ive had my filter up high airiating the water.

The fish (mainly the guppies) are swimming around pretty mental like they are enjoying themselves. The 2 angels keep themselves to themselves the fighter swims up and down the bag on its own and the neons are together. I have lost 4 of them over the first couple of days. I have no water kit either.

My tank is about 65l, do you think the fish are ok?? What should i be looking out for to see if they are possibly unwell??

Thanks

you've lost 4 fish.......... no offence but that doesn't really sound like they're all fine does it?!

you need to get a water test kit so you can see if there are problems.

How long ago did you put the fish in? They won't die straight away, it'll take a few days for the toxins to build up.

Also, how can you say they seem fine and then go on to say you've already lost 4 of them? I don't understand.

Welcome to the forums!

You need to do a couple of things really quick. Buy a proper liquid test kit ASAP. Not the one with strips, the one with test tubes.
You need to test for Ammonia, Nitrite and Nitrate and post your water stats on here so we can figure out whereabouts in your cycle you are.

If you can't get to a pet store right away, do a water change. See pinned thread at the top of this forum for the proper procedure.

Read up on cycling (also pinned) and see if you can find someone to give you a chunk of mature filter media. This will give your fish the best chance of survival.

When you say 'plenty', how much are you feeding the fish? Remember a fish's eye is usually the same size as its stomach. A rough rule, but one that should help you estimate how much to give them. Guppies will eat until they burst, and overfeeding will foul up your water pretty quick. Two or three small meals a day is better than a huge feed all at once.

You're going to have a lot of work on your hands getting your fish through the next few weeks whilst your tank is cycling, but don't worry, this is the best place for you to be. There's loads of info and people will try and help you as much as possible. You're certainly not the first person to make 'newbie' mistakes!

Good luck to you and your fish!

Get a test kit so you can check for ammonia and nitrite. Any readings over 0.25 are dangerous. Untill your tank is cycled (ie ammonia and nirtie = 0) then you need to be doing 15-25% water changes daily. Did you add dechlorinator? - you need to add this to tap water with each water change to get rid of chlorine and chloramine. You need an aqurium heater (not just warm tap water) if you don't already have one. Cut down on feeding untill the tank is cycled - a little food every or every other day. Take the fighter back - they are not community fish. In fact, I would recommend returning all your fish and doing a fishless cycle otherwise you are bound to have more deaths! Read this for Fishless Cycling: http://www.fishforums.net/content/New-to-t...shless-Cycling/ If your guppies are swimming around "pretty mental" I don't think they are enjoying themeslves. It would be a good idea (and in your fish's best interest) to start fresh and do some research before stocking your tank. Keep us informed :good: we are here to help.

The signs of ammonia poisoning won't be very obvious. You will just lose fish. As mentioned, you need a test kit (liquid, not strips) ASAP. For now, I would do a 50% water change and then at least one 25% WC every day until you get your kits. It's possible that the water treatment you are adding is one that detoxifies ammonia and thus is preventing problems for now but you will soon have nitrite too and that is another problem.

What/how many fish do you have? A 65l tank really is only large enough for about 8 or 12 smallish community fish. Angels will eventually need a much larger tank as they will grow to be at least 12" in height (fins). Besides the problems you have with an uncycled tank, you definitely have compatibility issues too with the fish you mentioned already. Bettas will attack any fish with large, ornate tails such as guppies and angels, thinking them to be another betta. Neons are also the natural prey of angels so the angels will eventually eat the neons.
