Hi, i need help identifying this fish. I originally bought it as a group of 4 Siamese flying fox, but as you can tell it definately isnt.

Im curious because it is not a chinese algae eater either. (So by a process of elimination there goes the two most likely candidates.)

It has four colours, On top it has a dark brown, belkow this is a yellow colour, underneath is black followed by white. It swims in short bursts, eats algae and swims the bottum for food like frozen bloodworms and brine shrimp and eats an occasional garden worm. And he/she likes to pearch itself on my bogwood, as u can tell. It has a downwards facing mouth, but it is not as protruding from his face as that of the chinese algae eater. Im puzzled......

So if anyone can help me out it would be great. I havnt found any info on this fish anywhere! Grrrr

Thankyou very much. By the looks of it i have "False siamensis", Epalzeorhynchus sp. or Garra taeniata. But ill read up a little more. Thanks once again.

I have two false flying foxes in a 40 gallon community tank. They're very active, eat everything from algae to flake and frozen and show alot of personality to boot.
They're certainly not as pretty as a true flying fox, but much more effective as a cleaner/scavenger. Mine only show slight aggression towards each other and sometimes tussel with my red-tailed shark, other than that they're well mannered. :)

Eh? What are you talking about?

The true SAE is the fish with less color, being purely grey with a single black stripe from snout to fork of tail.

The False Siamese Algae Eater, this fish, sometimes has a bit of yellow in its fins, and is the more colorful fish.

The true SAE are rather rare in the hobby, but THEY are the superior algae eater, definitely. The true SAE is the fish hailed as one of the few species known to the aquarium hobby to eat hair algae.

Still, the Thai Algae eater is still a pretty fish.

Thailand and Siam are actually the same place, so logistics would dictate that a Siamese and a Thai algae eater would be the same thing... but then again, the naming of species isn't always logical, so what do I know? :p
It's a cute fish, whatever it is. ^_^
